If you are considering a career in the dynamic and vibrant Construction Industry but unsure of what construction trade / pathway you'd like to follow, then this City & Guilds, Entry Level Extended Certificate course may just be what you are looking for. Delivered in our state of the art, highly resourced, spacious, safe workshops and learning environments, our highly experienced and fully qualified enthusiastic, knowledgeable tutors are there to provide you with the knowledge, skills and training you require to help you make a more informed choice on the trade / pathway you may want to pursue. This course has been designed to cover the basic skills and techniques associated with Plastering, Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery and Painting & Decorating. If you are on this course, you will spend approximately eight weeks in each of the four curriculum areas mentioned above. Learners will learn new skills and techniques from our specialist tutors and then after eight weeks move onto the next trade area. At the end of this thirty six week course, you will have been provided with the basic skills and knowledge required to make for a more informed choice on which career pathway you want to pursue the following year. If you enjoy predominantly working outdoors on many various projects then this could be your platform to success in this industry.

This Entry Level course will give you the basic skills and knowledge in the four areas of Plastering, Brickwork, Carpentry & Joinery and Painting & Decorating. Whilst in Plastering you will learn how to prepare background surfaces and apply render and finishing coats. You will learn how to mix Plaster and apply finishing coats and floating coats. Whilst undertaking the Brickwork segment of this course you will learn how to construct half brick walls, to lay blocks and how to build corners competently in various brickwork bonds. As the course progresses into Carpentry & Joinery our tutors will teach you how to accurately mark out, saw and chisel safely to form halving joints, housing joints and mortice and tenon joints. Finally in the last part of this construction carousel you will learn from our Painting tutors how to prepare background surfaces, and professionally paint and hang various wall coverings to a variety of different surfaces. You will also learn about the wider Construction Industry which includes progression routes, other roles and how the construction and build environment sector works together.

To start this Study Programme applicants should ideally but not essential possess a good level of English and maths at GCSE. You should also be able to demonstrate at interview your enthusiasm and dedication to become part of the Construction Industry, have excellent punctuality, be willing and motivated to attend regularly to all sessions. You will be provided with the necessary Personal Protective Equipment whilst undertaking practical activities, however you will be required to provide and wear your own safety footwear in all practical workshop activities. For your theory sessions you should be fully equipped with the required stationary (pens, pencils, note pad, ruler etc.) to capture notes for your revision purposes.

Assessment will be undertaken by the completion of various practical tasks which will be linked to the vocational area in which you are studying in. i.e. whilst in Brickwork you will be required to construct a wall from a drawing and your tutor will assess your work against a set of skills which match the standard of work expected in industry. You will be presented with similar tasks as you progress through the four distinct career pathways.

As part of this Study Programme you will undertake an initial diagnostic assessment to identify any potential support needs to help you achieve this course. It is an expectation that you will attend GCSE English and maths sessions if you are not already in possession of a Grade four or above in English and maths. To enable us to prepare you for the world of work you will attend a learning and development tutorial session that will help your employability, citizenship, personal welfare and development. During this Study Programme we will arrange for you to undertake a one week purposeful work experience placement with a local construction employer.

On successful completion of this course, you should be in a far better and more informed position to choose correctly your next steps. You may have really enjoyed one of the four vocational pathways during this course and we would encourage you to pursue this on one of our Level one courses which we offer in all the four courses you will have sampled whilst on this course. You may even gain a sponsorship from an employer who is willing to take you on as an Apprentice so you learn and attend college 1 day per week in paid employment whilst working alongside your employer for the remainder of the week.

Assessment

All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

Studying at College
