Kamala bakes up a treat

Scones were the order of the day at 91ֱthis week, when a star baker from Canon SladeSchoolvisited the Collegeٴ𳦰𲹳ٱher competitionwinning recipe.

Canon Slade pupil Kamala Dixon, 14, was the winner of the school’s annual scone baking competition. Afterwalking away with the school’sDarran ArmstonMemorial Trophy, Kamalawastheninvitedinto theCollege’s Catering Academy to bake up a batchٴ sellinitscafé and food outlet.

Kamalahadbeatenoff toughcompetitionduring theeventat Canon Slade,competing against150 other year 9 pupilsto be crowned winner. The judging panel consisted of representatives from Greenhalghs Bakery as well as Bolton, Blackburn andRunshaw College. Guest of honour wasNormaArmston, mother offormer Canon Slade pupilDarran Armston;the trophy isnamed in hismemory.

Kamala’swinningrecipeadded a unique twist tothetraditional sconeand includedlemon, almonds and cardamom.Jaki Hargreaves, manager oftheCollege’sCatering Academy,had sourcedtheingredientsٴ make the scones. In the kitchens she helpedKamalaandher fellow pupil HarryCohen, who joinedKamalaafterbeing namedrunner-up.

Ian Littlewood,SchoolsLiaison CoordinatoratBoltonCollege, saidWeweredelighted to welcome Kamala andHarryٴ 91ֱ. The scones they recreatedweredelicious and soldout bythe end oftheday. I think wehavethe nextMary Berryon ourhands.”

Kamala was accompanied attheCollegeby AnneTeasdale,who teaches foodatCanon Slade. She said, “Thecompetitionhas been goingfor10yearsnow, and for me, it’soneof the highlightsoftheschool’s calendar.It createsa fantastic buzz and is all done in the spirit of fun. We were delighted to be invited totheCollege, it was a lovely opportunity for Kamala andwed love to comeback againnext year”.

Kamala, who would like to study medicine in the future,added“I do a lot of baking at home, and’dpractisedmy recipebeforehand;I wanted to do something a little different to make my sconesreallystand out. I was so happy to hear I had won, and it was great coming to the Collegeٴ make my scones and seethembeingsold to the students”.
